Mary Jane

Noted Nest

By Abhijna Nagaraja

So he could not sleep. Big deal.

He had rarely any time to get a wink in or have his meals. Big deal.

The truth being, he did not think it a big deal either.

In fact he saw not much reason to pay regard to his health.

Not much reason to make it past twenty three.

Not much reason except the ray of hope that was his lover. His lover, back at home.

In a farmside house in Maryland;

with strawberry blonde hair and a slim frame with arms almost too awkward on her own body.

Yes, she was a ray of hope, his lover Mary Jane.

Why, she was a piece of the sun fallen to earth.

Mary Jane.

Mary Jane.

Mary Jane.

Mary Jane like the shoes of his new lover.

My, what a cosmic affair. Something fresh and wild and clandestine.

Yes, the city had seen a fire to compare with the sun,

and the world had seen a flame so bright for the first time.

And he turned a liar, he turned to a cheat for he could never tell his hope on the farm. Overwhelmed with guilt, he was afraid;

that even his sun would not believe he should make it past twenty three.
