I Wish to Be Water

By Jaesryna Sachdeva

water is a chameleon, I say.

I love it, for its heart isn’t deaf.

Its heart isn’t weak, if I may.

always on the right, never the left.

under the sun, under its shine, it lives as water.

under the snow, under the frost, it freezes to live as ice.

it doesn’t need a silver storm to know,

if the cold’s harsh enough, suffice.

water washes the sins of another,

ice sticks to cause discomfort.

same womb, two brothers

same shade different colours.

I love ice,

for it knows to mirror the cold.

I love how in a trice,

it’s not scared to teach it a lesson very old.

I wish to be water,

transitioning with each vessel.

like my friend the ice, I wish not to lauder

when the heart screams to stop it all.

I wish to be water,

I wish to become ice when it’s cold.

I wish to not smother,

I wish to be assertive, bold.
