Heart Fire

Noted Nest

By Saranya Devaraj

A soul weary from monotonous routine

My flesh grown stiff like a machine

Trudging through life, a shadow of my former self.

The fire that had once burned within me had dwindled to a mere spark.

With hazy mind and idle body

Glancing around, I entered the class

Echoing voices in the room, loud and clear

A plain, secretive girl entered, sitting near

The sharp, gossiping eyes whisper and stare.

She hid behind her mask, ignoring the world.

Her eyes glistened, like a pearl under the sun, which shone bright

Her stare was a deep dark ocean that could drown anyone

I stumbled

My heart screamed, hard enough to be heard

A sudden blood rush to pursue and make a word

Slowly, my feet retraced her steps

I had a moment of curiosity.

What was the purpose of her cap?

A lone wind, gentle and cold, served an answer

The hair, as dense as the midnight forest, mysterious and alluring

Dangled beneath her knee, like the waterfall

A spark ignited my heart fire

Urging my soul, amusing me with desire

My body froze, fear curled up in the gut

When she turned around,

Eyes that are melting,

Her dancing hair,

The moment she untangled her veil,

Words poured in my mind, like a river

A chance to choose for the perfect description

Her ‘what’ sounded like a melody?

If a nightingale were ever given a voice, could it sound like this?

Seeing my unwavering face,

She gave away a smile that adorned her

An imprint on my heart, an incidence to mark my love

My hands reached for my clenching heart

As a belief in love at first sight.
