Fork of Life

One of the most crucial days of my life, which passed by so quickly, but changed my life just by the blink of an eye. I grabbed my coffee as I was heading up for a bright day ahead in school. After the daily prayers, I rushed to the school 3 hours early, as if I was missing a train, the stage was set for me and my friend Akash. We were going to be rewarded for our contribution towards the school, as we Graced our school with the prestigious National Debate Champions Cup Morocco, which was the first ever vindication for us. I was on cloud nine, "What are you going to to do with the medallion today, Akash?" Are you going to brag it?"Akash was not responding well today, it seemed like he had something else circulating his mind, at that time I just assumed it as butterflies, because I was incarcerated by my own. He was a reticent outside the debate room. "I just feel like something isn't right about today." Akash murmured. Well, hours passed by in excitement, both our faces were draped over the arena, it was the day I awaited my whole life. I finally felt that my life was worth the hassle. "Now, I would like to request the two supreme of our school, sorry our country, Akash and Ajay!" The thundering claps, the roaring crowd, the rumbling ground, my punding heart, I soaked it all in. I finally earned some respect amongst my peers, and I felt like Akash would overcome his autism when he witnesses people bowing to his prowess. Abdul kept a neutral expression when I grinned from one ear to the other. Akash was shivering, but since we were childhood friends, I comforted him. The medal was inching closer to us by second until, a scream erupted from the back, which spread like a wildfire in every heart when the Earth started trembling and so did we, the school was under an emergency, the most dreaded earthquake erupted, I was devastated, but I had to align my senses in the right direction, but before I could process it, the stage collapsed. Everyone was on the ground, my head stirred. While I was recovering myself, I heard Akash sobbing for my help, my subconscious dragged me towards him, but before I could get a hold of him, something else captivated my eyes, the million dollar scholarship that we were being rewarded with. I had a decision to make, if I head to the scholarship, my past would vanish into thin air, if I save Akashl, my future would be darkened, in the middle of this dilemma, only one thought came into my mind, 'To be or not to be' My choice was clear now.

Today, I am glad the way it all turned out, the coffee is still warm, and when I look around the room, I see bright sparkling marbles, a mantle embellished by laurels, trophies, medals and whatnot. But when I look inside my personal room, there is nothing but darkness and regrets.
