She was jolted out of her thoughts by the sudden buzz of her phone. It was a message from her father. They had not spoken since yesterday and so he had probably decided messaging would have been easier. She read the text that flashed on her mobile screen.

“Eat on time and rest well. I will be late.”

She sighed as she turned her attention to the book in her hand. She loved reading so much but today it gave her only solace, no joy. There was a sharp knock on her door and she replied in a steady voice, “Come in.”

It was her elder sister, Ria. She was a mother-figure to her – someone who understood her, knew when to stop her and when to let her be. She loved her sister immensely. There was an instantaneous change – a smile lit up Rashika’s teary face. Ria also put on a cheerful façade and said, “Rashika, see what is there for dinner today! Go wash your hands and come soon.”

Rashika smiled and got off the bed gently, caressing Sparkles’ soft fur. He gurgled happily and continued licking his milk. She washed her hands and was back soon. She was not as ecstatic as she usually was but tried to sound as happy as she could. “Thank you so much Ria,” she said as they ate together, holding back tears that threatened to trickle down.

Things seemed to be perfect for her till yesterday evening when she was rushed to the hospital. Her father, the only other person who cared for her deeply, naturally troubled by the previous day’s happenings, lacked the courage to speak to her. He was usually busy but further immersed himself in work today. After all, yesterday had been quite eventful.

As she combed her long, black hair, her gaze fell on the mirror, all she could see was the nasal cannula – a stark reminder of her present situation. She had always tried to be the ‘good girl’ – enduring everything very bravely from her parents’ separation to her father being unable to give her enough time. She did everything that she was expected to. She had moved on but had not accepted things so easily.

She did not want it all to end so fast, just when she was beginning to enjoy it. All her dreams were shattered and dashed to the dirt. She wanted these precious moments to last, to cherish them and actually have fun. As the sun rose the next day, it did not guarantee Rashika a long life but convinced her to accept things faster. She had to live to the fullest. ACCEPTANCE… that was her only hope now.
